"A Lazy Afternoon"

Pastel by Kathy Harder

Cougar (Mountain Lion)

Northern Vancouver Island, British Columbia

A large population of British Columbia’s cougars reside on the north end of Vancouver Island. These graceful, shy creatures tend to stay away from humans and live mainly in the forested mountain habitats on the eastern side of the island.

Cougars are big predatory animals with reddish-brown fur and white belly. The cat has a long tail, which helps to maintain balance. They are extremely fast and silent hunters making the majority of their attacks successful. The cougar is one of the top predators on Vancouver Island and prefer the abundant black-tailed deer. When deer are unavailable, cougars prey on smaller animals.
